Space Syntax

Space Syntax is basically a way of analyzing spaces such as cities or buildings. The Social Logic of Space is a very technical but fascinating book (with great diagrams), that explains one kind of space syntax. There are a few different ways of breaking up the space, but for our purposes we can be a little informal. Let's say each room, hallway, courtyard, etc. is one node. If a hallway turns to make an "L" shape, I call that 2 spaces.

Here I have maps of each place where I've lived (that I remember), in reverse chronological order. This is a really interesting exersize and it makes you consider how the layout of a space impacts the way you live in it. To do this, just make a dot for each room and a line connecting the dots that represent connected rooms. So if you can get to a room from a hallway, those two nodes are connected. The location of the dots on the page doesn't really matter; you can think of the map as knotted strings.

My Maps

Image Description

This is kind of a shotgun house with four roommates.

Image:rock_hill.jpg I lived here for a year with my friends James and JT, and we had a great time. There were more than a few times when we chased each other around that big loop.
Image:glendale.jpg This was the last place where I lived in Los Angeles, with one other roommate.
Image:warehouse.jpg I can't remember the name of the neighborhood this was in, but it was a big warehouse space that a couple of friends and I built bedrooms into. The four nodes connected in a rectangle were actually sort of one big space; the kitchen, living room, and two studio spaces. It was a really flexible space that we got to make our own.
Image:tujunga.jpg This place was a dump, but it was cheap. I had a reasonably good time with my one roommate, except that we always had to go through each other's bedrooms to get anywhere else in the house, so there wasn't much privacy.
Image:pasadena.jpg This was the first place I lived in in LA, and it was basically a one room apartment.
Image:spartanburg.jpg This is the house I grew up in in Spartanburg.

Also, while I haven't lived there, I wanted to include a place called Railroad Earth in Atlanta. Railroad Earth is an artist co-op, video/audio production house and recording studio, and is a live/work space for some friends of mine. The house used to be a little schoolhouse and is always bustling with activity, so I thought it would be interesting to make a map of it.

Your Maps

Thanks to everyone who drew these maps. They're all really interesting. Tomorrow (Friday) we'll meet in the library at 4 so you can add notes about your maps.

The map of my house is drawn not showing the distinction of different floors. I wanted to show how every room connects, even if it's on a different floor. The floor plan is very open and all the rooms radiate off the living room.

Well, The Fine Arts Center has a new building this year, and it is wonderful. I missed Drama rooms and closets, and the dace room, though. (Oops, Sorry D`: ) I was a little too concentrated on hallways and finishing my 'map'. Dance is on upper floor across music rooms (voice?) And Drama on lower and higher floor including grids and lighting. So, really I missed really important rooms... Ah well. :D

ATC

This is my house on lake keowee in oconee county. Although the house has no real alternate routes anywhere, it is very nice just to live on a lake. the house is relativly large, also, and complete with a room with airhockey and shuffleboard, and a theater.

AG

AH

This is my part of Mr. Gilberts mapping project. My house is somewhat large, and as you can see from the map it has two floors. This map shows the connectivity of my house, how all the rooms connect. This connectivity gives my house a social feel. This really goes hand-in-hand with my house, because there is always something going on in my house.

AMG

The simplicity of the map is able to easily show the realtion between how all the rooms and hallways sync together. This particular house connects to the outside because the sidewalk wraps around the side of the house, which makes it different. The concept of drawing these maps is to show relation and space.

This is not just my house in Florence, but the spaces I consider part of my house even though they are outside, like the garden and my climbing tree.

AWS

this is my house in easley and the floor plan or something close to my house i think it is pretty neat ,the way we show where the doors and closets and how you move through is awesome.

CD

This is my house. It's a four bedroom two story house.

Well, this is simply a map of my home i am currently living in. My home is simply a 1 level home located on the North Side of Spartanburg, SC. It has 3 bed rooms,2 bath rooms, a living room,a dinning room, a kitchen. It also has a dog pin in the back yard and a small tool shed. The map shows all the different way though my home and the ways they all are tied together.

EB

I chose to draw a layout of my house and when I finished drawing the connections between the rooms I was really interested to see a whole new perspective of my home. I really liked the concept of all the rooms being connected in some way.

EF

Image:ef_.jpg

This is my really small home. It is actually a mobile home so there are only two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. All of the different rooms are connected by this long hallway. The only way to get from one room to another is to use that hallway therefore if you leave somebody will probably notice. The other map is of a building from my home high school. It is call the round building. Unfurtunatly I did not have the time or the memory to finish drawing my high school.

EV

This is where I live currently...it's one of those split-level homes. If I were to map the space out vertically, instead of from bird's eye view, it'd be a short spiral that branched out on the three levels. The bottom and mid-floors are connected in one large circle. Lots of space. Too much space. Like, for example, one half of the house is this huge living room and dining room while the other half is condensed with bedrooms and such. Pretty crazy design, but that's what makes it awesome. =D

JKS

These maps are of the bottom floor of my house. The first shows every room with the dots and connecting lines, and the bottom one shows only the lines and dots.

JV

Before I drew this I wanted to go with something simple. So I chose my house in Spartanburg SC. I think my is good but I think some peoples are better than my. I think my line, quality, and value is pretty good although it was rather pretty simple I think. While I was drawing this I was thinking of all of the spaces, rooms and many possible ways I could get around the house. Well thats about pretty much it I have to say I guess.

LK

Image:lk_.jpg

Well, I know that this is really confusing...my line quality isn't as good as the rest of you guys!;) But I love this house--it's the beach house my family rents for one week of the year. The whole house is built around one big empty space- a living/dining room upstairs and a garage downstairs. All of the rooms have connections to almost every other room through this space... so there's a lot of free movement. I suppose that's why I love it so much-- it represents a freedom of spirit and memory for me.

This is a map out of my house. It has three floors including a basement. I have one hallway on the third floor,so I connected rooms with curved lines so that It wouldn't look like my house is riddled with halls. My room is on the top floor near the bathroom, across from my sister's room. My house is very open and airy. You can see eighty percent of my house just from looking off the balcony. The only part of the house that you can't see from the balcony is my basement. The basement consists of a pool room an extra room, and my laundry room.I also have a back porch that has a great view of the woods in my back yard. My house has so much thinking room. It is a real home to me. It has a really organic style, and it is home for free thinkers.

This is my house in Greenville, SC. There are two floors and a very open layout. Many of the rooms are connected, and almost every room on the first floor has a door leading outside.

RMB

Image:rmb.jpg

This is where I live my life in Prosperity SC. There are three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and several assorted others.

RR

Image:rr_.jpg

this project is all about the connections between objects and the space between them. when you draw this space it starts to connect every thing and forms really neat maps of space though I don't really understand it its pretty neat so you should really check it out.

RRT

Image:rrt.jpg

This is a map of my house and it's really cool because it's centered around one central room that conects to all other rooms in the house. And it shows the form of movement and flow. Matt is like the coolest dude ever because his art is so amazing, it's like whoa!

SF

Image:sf_.jpg

This is a map of the first and second floors of my house. The floors are connected by the main room of the second floor and a room on the bottom right of the first floor.

ST

Image:st_.jpg

This is my house. is one story and has a studio and several porches. It's a pretty spacey place.

TKS

This is my house in Chapin, SC. It has three stories that are connected by two sets of stairs and even a laundry chute. It is a fun house that is pretty easy to get around in.
